INKTOBER Series 2018

31 Original illustrations based on spooky Folklore from around the world. These drawings were all drawn by hand, with brush, ink, and inkwash. I really wanted to step out of my comfort zone with these drawings, and embrace my love of folklore and push at my cartooning or comic-book style.

Mothman- Over the years many folks have reported strange sightings in the woods of West Virginia. The "Mothman" has been known to soar through the trees at night and has eyes that glow like "bicycle reflectors".

Guajona- She'll come into your home and silently stalk the halls, she'll drain your blood with one razor sharp tooth. Some say the "Guajona", just might be an early Cantabrian version of the vampire legend.

Banshee- Contrary to popular belief the "Banshee" is not a malevolent spirit. And her wailing or keening heralds the death of family member. Her calls are a lament for the future loss.

Preta (Hungry Ghost)-  It is believed that the hunger of the "Preta" is insatiable. In Hinduism, Taoism, Buddhism and some folklore it is believed that the spirit of a greedy or jealous person will come back as one of these pathetic hungry ghosts.

Black Annis- "Black Annis" has a taste for the soft flesh of misbehaving children. Beware her lair by the great oak tree. It said she dug it out with her iron claws.

Jenny Greenteeth- Be wary around the lakes and swamps children, for Jenny Greenteeth may be lurking. She just loves to pull folks into the waters to drown them and eat them.

Changeling- Throughout Europe there are tales of children who have been swapped with a Fairy. Often elderly, these "Changelings" wished to take advantage of the child's family and be coddled and cared for, and never have to work for the rest of their days

Drekavac- Only visible at night the "Drekavac" lurks by lakes, swamps and cemeteries. It is sometimes mistaken for a child calling for people passing by to come and baptise it.

Dullahan- Before there was the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow there was the "Dullahan". Carrying it's head the color of moldy cheese and bearing it's whip fashioned from a human spine, this creature rides out from Irish lore and whenever it stops.

Churel- In South-East Asia a woman who was mistreated by in-laws and dies may come back as a "Churel" to enact her revenge.

Dybbuk- A malicious spirit in Jewish mythology, that is said to cling to a host body and bring them misfortune.

Jure Grando- In 17th century Croatia the little village of Kringa was terrorized for sixteen years. Each night a dead man by the name of "Jure Grando" was rising from his grave and stalking the streets.

Funayurei- Off the coasts of Japan, beware the vengeful spirit the "Funayurei". Known to try and capsize ships in all sorts of ways.

Wendigo- Deep in the northern forests of the Americas lurks a creature which hungers for your flesh. The "Wendigo" of Algonquin folklore is said to have once been a man but possessed and driven mad by insatiable greed.

White Lady- In cultures all around the globe there are tales of the "White Lady"; A ghostly apparition of woman dressed all in white. Often she is tied to specific women who haunt their castles or towns after a horrible or mysterious death.

Yara-ma-yah-who- The adorable Aboriginal creature who likes to hide out in fig trees and drop down on unsuspecting walkers by and drain their blood through the suckers on it's fingers. Then it takes a nap. So cute!

Skin Walker- The twisted ceremonies of the "Yee Naaldlooshii" go against the values and beliefs of the Navajo. These skin walkers can transform themselves into animals, often coyote or other animals associated with bad omens to commit their vile deeds.

Pocong-  In Malaysia and Indonesia, if the traditional burial shroud is not untied after 40 days, the soul of the deceased my come up out of the grave as a "Pocong" or "wrapped ghost" to warn people that it must be released.

Rokurokuri- There are many tales starting from the Edo period in Japan of the "Rokurokuri" a mischievious being who appears human. This Yokai can extend it's long neck and often do bizarre and unpredictable things when they think no-one is watching.

Leshy- Sometimes playful and sometimes dangerous the deepest part of the woods in Russia is home to the "Leshy". He is ruler over the forest and wildlife there and if you want something from his realm it is to him you must pay tribute.

Rusalka- Haunting rivers and waterways in the Slavic world is the "Rusalka", the soul of a young woman who died by drowning. In some tales she is the spirit of a woman who killed herself due to an unhappy marriage and now lures unsuspecting men.

Manananggal- The wonderfuly creepy creature from the Philippines. A vampire like creature who can divide herself in half to fly over the land hunting for her victims.

Teke-Teke- According to urban legend in Japan, the spirit of a girl cut in half by a train roams the city. If, late one night, you hear a scratching "Teke Teke" noise by the train station, run!

Orang Minyak- (Oily man) is a legendary creature in Malaysia coated in grease and known to abduct young women in the night.

Nalusa Falaya- According to Choctaw legend, the "Nalusa Falaya" is so terrifying it is able to scare it's victims unconscious. And to then consume them. Never go out to the swamp at night alone.
